Latrobe Uni Continue Devastating Form

Latrobe Uni Womens Soccer team entertained Melton at home and continued their devastating form from prior weeks. Despite missing four key players Latrobe played a well composed and at times breathtaking football to completely demolish Melton, chalking up eight unanswered goals in the process.

It also was the last game for both Tina Schmidt and Jenna Carson as they said a fond farewell and went home back to Germany and Canada respectively. They were a great hit with the squad and a tremendous support to the team.

From the kick off Latrobe put Melton under pressure when Nicole Mills sent Justine Marum on her way but she was well closed down by the Melton defence. Melton launched an attack only for Emily Ryan to win the ball in defence and pass to Tory Pettit, who sent Justine on her way. Justine shot over the bar and Melton were let off. The goal kick went straight to Justine, whose quickly taken shot was charged down for a corner. From the corner the ball was cleared by an increasingly desperate Melton defence for another corner. This time the cross was met by Jenna Carson but her header sent the ball wide.

Though Latrobe were in the ascendency the passing at times was inaccurate in the final third of the field. Tory played Nicole through and she won a corner. From the cross Jenna got her head to the ball but it was easily collected by the keeper. Latrobe were now all over their opponents but could not finish. Lisa Doyle moved the ball up field and found Nicole with a through ball. Nicole turned and fed Tory who snapped a quick shot that went over. Nicole and Tory combined again but this time Tory’s shot hit the side netting. Latrobe continued to pepper the Melton penalty area but could not score.

Coach Victor Sekulov made a change and put Paula Massouh on. A minute later Rosie Holgate worked her way through the defence and was stopped by a large group of Melton defenders. The ball fell to Justine who tapped it back to Tory. Tory placed her shot clinically into the goals. It was 1-0 after 17 minutes of play.

Seven minutes later it was 2-0. Paula received the ball just over the half way line and in a mesmerising run she went past one, two defenders and the keeper to score her first goal for Latrobe and Latrobe’s second. Six minutes later it was 3-0. If Paula’s first goal was a gem then this was sheer class. Paula showed her dribbling skills by going past four players including the goalkeeper to score with an open goal in front of her and no one around. Melton were shell shocked.

From the kick off the ball was intercepted by Beccie Ambrose and she quickly played it across to Nicole. Nicole raced towards goal and finished in style. It was 4-0 and not even 30 seconds had passed since Latrobe’s last goal. Minutes later Justine did well to get the ball to Naomi Hirst but Melton combined to clear the danger.

Then Latrobe scored an audacious goal. Tory held the ball well and then found Paula. Paula again dribbled her way through the static Melton defence and with an open goal beckoning, held it up for Nicole to run and tap it in for Nicole’s second. With five minutes left in the half Latrobe attacked in numbers. Tory, Paula, Naomi and Paula again had chances to score but shots went wide or the keeper saved well.

With the start of the second half only minutes old Naomi was first to a cross but headed well over. Nice passing allowed Latrobe to threaten again but Melton defended well. This was temporary as Latrobe again attacked in numbers. Playing with five up front Latrobe had shots that were charged down, blocked or went wide in succession. Tory played Nicole through and her shot hit the side netting. On the other side of the field Rosie had a chance and it went just wide.

Eleven minutes into the half Nicole broke through on her own and placed a nice chip over the keeper for Latrobe’s sixth and her first hat trick! 6-0 and Latrobe were in complete control. Coach Victor Sekulov took Tina Schmidt off to rousing applause. Her contributions to Latrobe Uni Womens Soccer team for 2009 had ended.

Jenna tackled well to gain possession and her cross was met well by Tory, only for the keeper to make a great save. Melton were having trouble getting the ball out of the midfield as Latrobe stripped the ball from the Melton midfielders and launched attack after attack. Another effort at goal was deflected for a corner. From the resulting cross Paula met it well to header the ball into the back of the net. It was Paula’s first hat trick of the season and Latrobe now led 7-0.

Victor now took Jenna Carson off and she too was cheered as she made her way to the touchline, ending her association with Latrobe Uni Womens Soccer team. From then on Latrobe took it easy and lowered the pace of the game. Nevertheless they still had chances to add to their tally but could not find the back of the net.

Finally a free kick awarded to Latrobe enabled Tory to step up and dutifully dispatch it. It was now 8-0 to Latrobe. For the first time Latrobe Uni had scored eight goals in two successive games! And there were chances to add to that score but they came to naught. Naomi was played through following some nice touches by Rosie but her effort went wide.

Latrobe Uni coach Victor Sekulov said after the game, “Our play early on was frustrating as our passing and running off the ball was erratic. We seemed to be running out of ideas as to how to score. I made a change and fortunately when we scored the first goal we fell back into our normal playing rhythm. From then on we had total dominance and were lethal.

The team will miss Jenna and Tina, both for their on-field contributions and also for their off-field support and good humour. German humour is particularly infectious. In Tina’s case for someone playing football for the first time in her life and scoring a memorable goal in the process was most pleasing. Jenna is a great player, whose strong and determined tackling helped turn many a game, and is a coach’s dream. We at Latrobe wish them all the very best and thank them for their support and contributions to the club.”

Latrobe Uni will be entertaining Western Suburbs at home on the 19th July. Kickoff is at 11.00am.
