Latrobe Uni Convincing Winners over Darebin
Latrobe Uni Womens Soccer team travelled up the road to meet Darebin Falcons and went home with a convincing win. Coming off a 6-0 victory the week before Latrobe were quietly confident and their superior team play resulted in a very comfortable 8 – 1 victory.
The game kicked off with both sides trying to overcome a bumpy and uneven pitch and controlling the ball was the primary task. Latrobe had the first real chance when Nicole Mills beat her marker and threatened the Darebin goal. Darebin launched an attack of their own but that was easily dealt with by Beccie Ambrose. Play was going back and forth until a piece of individual magic from Justine Marum put Latrobe in front.
Eight minutes into the match Justine received the ball outside the penalty area. She went past one defender and then beat another. With the keeper coming off her line Justine tapped it past her. It was 1-0 to Latrobe. Minutes later Rosie Holgate threatened the Darebin goal but desperate defending cleared the danger. For Darebin it was only momentary relief.
Another strong Latrobe threat was cleared for a corner. Tory Pettit curled it in and Jenna Carson was there to header it into the goal. It was 2-0 and Latrobe were slowly beginning to take control of the game. Nicole had a chance on the right and minutes later a free kick taken by Tory went just wide. Emily Ryan won the ball in defence and played it to Jenna. Jenna passed to Tory whose shot was well saved by the keeper, though she spilled it and the ball was desperately cleared for a Latrobe throw in. From the throw in Latrobe again threatened but could only gain a corner. The corner was quickly taken and Latrobe had a chance to score but it was scrambled away. Beccie won another tackle in defence and working her way forward passed to Nikki Garner. Nikki hit it first time but skewed her shot wide.
But Darebin were not giving up. A Darebin throw was not properly dealt with and Hannah Matthew-Prosser had to make a good save to stop Darebin scoring. From the save Latrobe threatened again with Nicole providing a nice pass to Nikki. Her shot was well covered by the goalkeeper. She would be beaten minutes later.
A tireless Jenna was tackling and harassing the Darebin midfield and her efforts were rewarded when she stole the ball, rode a tackle and passed it to Rosie. Rosie raced down and passed it in towards Justine. Justine then raced towards goal and as defenders raced to tackle her she cleverly passed to Nikki, free on her own. Nikki dutifully tapped it past the goalkeeper. It was now 3-0.
Five minutes later it was 4-0. Justine was again involved in the action and holding the ball well she timed her pass perfectly to Tory. Tory moved to her right and crossed it into the penalty area. It seemed to beat everyone except Nikki, who got to the ball and slammed it into the back of the net. Latrobe were in complete control. The first half ended shortly after.
Within a minute of the kick off of the second half Latrobe almost scored. The team started from where they left off in the first half. Nicole raced down the wing and played the ball in towards Tory. She in turn threaded a pass through to Justine and her shot was well saved by the keeper. From the goal kick Latrobe regained possession and Nikki was fouled, giving Latrobe a free kick. Tory took it and shot well over.
It was just five minutes into the second half when Justine had another attempt that was handled away. A penalty! Latrobe’s first penalty of the season. Coach Victor Sekulov directed Beccie to take it. She struck it well for her first goal of the season and Latrobe were now leading 5 -0.
Beccie was in the thick of the action minutes later when she raced out of defence and passed to Nicole. Nicole played it to Tory and ran on to receive the returned pass. Nicole passed it back to Tory but her effort was deflected for a corner. Latrobe were dazzling the Darebin defence with their passing play. The resulting corner was cleared away but only to the midfield where it was brought up again. The ball fell to Jenna whose shot was again well saved by the keeper.
The pressure was being applied by Latrobe and it soon paid dividends. Tory found Justine with a nicely weighted pass and Justine did the rest. Her shot beat the goalkeeper on her near post. It was 6-0, equalling Latrobe’s highest score for the season, achieved only the week before.
But then Darebin struck back. An opportunistic cross bounced into the penalty area and Hannah was slow to react. The ball bounced off the cross bar and Lisa Doyle’s attempt to clear the ball, surrounded by Darebin forwards, pushed it into the net. It was Lisa’s first goal of the season but an own goal. She got a lot of cheerful teasing for that one.
At 6-1 Latrobe were still not finished. Tory combined with Nicole well and Nicole’s pass to Nikki was cleared for a corner. Nicole took the corner and Jenna met it with a lovely curling shot into the back of the net. It was now 7-1. Tory had a chance but it was saved and then Rosie beat her defender on the left and shot agonisingly just wide. Nicole played Nikki through and she also put her shot just wide of the far post.
The ball was staying in the Darebin half as Latrobe won successive corners. With only a few minutes to go Victor brought on Naomi Hirst for her season debut. With three minutes to go Beccie found Naomi and she raced away from the static Darebin defence game to score her first goal of the season. A goal on her debut and Latrobe were winners 8-1. Their highest score of the season!
Latrobe Uni coach Victor Sekulov said after the game, “It was difficult playing on the bumpy and uneven ground but full credit to the team for adapting to the conditions and refining our passing. There were instances where we were not sharp enough and our passing was not clever. One can fall into a false sense of security when you are well ahead and you become lax and forget the principles which we trained hard to reinforce. But we talked about that and improved it in the second half.
We are playing with confidence and more importantly with a better understanding of each other’s positioning and the reading of what is required in defending and in attack. In simple terms we are clicking. There is still work to be done and we will focus on that at training but overall another excellent result.”
Latrobe Uni will be entertaining Melton at home on the 28st June. Kickoff is at 11.00am.
