Latrobe Uni Wins Without Kicking a Ball

Latrobe Uni Womens Soccer team won Sunday’s encounter against North Geelong 3-0, without actually going on the field and kicking a ball. Apparently North Geelong had forfeited the game due to their inability to field a team for the weekend encounter.

Latrobe Uni coach Victor Sekulov contacted North Geelong and received a call from the North Geelong Club Secretary confirming that they could not field the required number of players for this round and therefore were forfeiting. As a result Latrobe were awarded the three points and a 3-0 win.

Latrobe Uni coach Victor Sekulov commented, “Once again at the eleventh hour a team pulls out of playing a game against us. It is very frustrating and I know the players are very disappointed. We may have gained the three points but we miss out on match practice. I and the players would rather have played the game than have the forfeit."

Latrobe Uni Captain Mel Meehan said “Sunday's forfeit was unfortunate. It was however a good opportunity for the team to recover and regroup as many players were carrying ongoing injuries and illness. While it gave us a welcome break to recover, it has also left us at a bit of a disadvantage as we've only played 3 games in 5 weeks. This puts us behind some of the other top teams in terms of game experience this season."

Midfielder Tory Pettit added, “I was extremely disappointed to find out that our game had been cancelled. Hopefully it will mean all of our players will now be fully recovered, fit and keen to play the next match.”

Latrobe Uni will be playing away from home this Sunday against Melbourne Bears at Darebin International Sports Centre. Kickoff is at 10.30am.
