Season 2009 Kicks off with Latrobe Uni Womens Soccer Team Sitting Idle

The 2009 football season kicked off this weekend however the Latrobe Uni Womens Soccer team were sitting idle due to an 11th hour withdrawal of their opponents Whittlesea Zebras. With the first match of the season scheduled for the 26th April start, the late withdrawal of the Zebras meant Latrobe Uni have to wait one more week before their first game.

Latrobe Uni coach Victor Sekulov commented “It was very disappointing, especially for the players. We had been training and preparing for this first game and to sit out the round made it difficult for us. Everyone wants to get that first game out of the way. Helps clear the nerves and jitters the first game of the season always brings.

Unfortunately we could not play this weekend whereas other teams managed to get that first game under their belt. They will be the better for it. Still we will go back to training and work on a few things and prepare ourselves mentally for this sunday”.

Latrobe Uni Captain Mel Meehan said “It did not give us a chance to get a lot of preseason nerves out of our system. The team is coming along pretty well; we are basically a new squad but I am pretty confident that we can be quite successful and the girls have worked well in the preseason.

Obviously we are disappointed and cannot do anything about it but we are now looking forward to our first game this weekend against Western Suburbs.”

Midfielder Tory Pettit added, “I was extremely disappointed to find out on Friday afternoon that we were not playing on Sunday. Most of us have been training for a few months now and after having to adjust to new players coming in and out and unfortunately losing a few players through injury and work commitments etc I felt that we were at a point where we were both mentally and physically prepared.

It's unfortunate that we have to go through this again this week and I think that seeing the results of other games can sometimes put added pressure on teams that are yet to play. Having said that, I'm sure all the girls are looking forward to playing this Sunday and benefiting from all our hard work in the off season”.

Results of the round include a come from behind win for new team Western Suburbs against Melton, a 1-2 win away from home which confirms they will be one of the challengers for the title. Bundoora, one of the firm favourites to take out the title, kicked off their first game with style. Being a goal down early in the game they went on to win convincingly 1-4 at Darebin, sending them to the top of the ladder, where it will be difficult to displace them.

Latrobe Uni will be playing away from home this Sunday against Western Suburbs at Ralph Reserve, Ardeer. Kickoff is at 10.45am.
