With a win draw and loss in the first 3 weeks it was time for the Thirds to step up and show if they will be genuine contenders this year and they did so in emphatic style crushing the hapless Boroondara Lions 7-1.
Kicking with a strong wind in the first half the Thirds started cautiously and took a while to assert their authority. John Hearns and Jonathan were winning the midfield battles but found it hard to penetrate Boroondara disciplined defence. Long shots were attempted to take advantage of the wind but this tactic didn’t bear fruit and it was left to Vedran to impose his class on the game with a great headed goal from a corner and a characteristic twisting dribbling run which resulted in the ball ending up in the bottom corner. With two goals in the bag after about 20 minutes it looked like we would storm ahead but to the opposition’s credit they scored a scrappy goal from a corner to make it a respectable 2-1 late in the half. Vedran however restored the advantage and completed his hat-trick just before half time after another great turn and shot from inside the box.
Playing against the wind in the second half is suppose to be difficult but the guys made a mockery of this theory, by running over the top of the opposition and scoring four more unanswered goals. Vedran, Alaa, Jonathan and Carlos all scored to complete the thrashing. Vedran with four goals was the stand out player, ably supported by John Hearns, and Jonathan in the midfield. The defence was rock solid with Dukes having another good game in goals and Sava marshalling the defence of Big Mark, Jules and Damien superbly. Chris “Tranner” had his usual solid game anchoring the midfield and snuffing out any forward thrusts, and the Garlick brothers worked tirelessly up and down the wings all day.
All up a great win after an indifferent start to the season. Hopefully this will be the springboard for another successful season.
