University has climbed back to second on the ladder after beating Geelong.
After an evenly matched first half, University moved up a gear after the half time break to take the game from Geelong who now languish in the bottom half of the table
University welcomed back Paul Umina to its line up who has been on the long-term injury list since last year. Umina was given his chance in the second half and soon made an impact on the game when he was fouled by the Geelong keeper in the penalty box. Damir Mitric took the resulting penalty, and although the Geelong keeper saved the kick, the ball bounced back to Mitric who slammed it into the net.
The goal demoralised Geelong who had been continually frustrated by the efficiency of University's defenders Tek Randla, James Boston, and Andrew Straubinger.
Nick Moutis continued to show good form in the University midfield and was awarded with a goal when a deflection off a Geelong defender placed the ball at his feet with only the keeper to beat. Moutis slotted the ball past the keeper to secure the three points.
The win was University's fourth of the season.
The University Reserves team secured another win, beating Geelong's Reserve team 1-0. University's Reserves face second placed Lalor next week in a match that may decide which team will win finish top of the league.
