Round 3.
La Trobe University Soccer Club recorded its second win of the season, winning at home against Ballarat Soccer
Club.
The teams shared equal possession for much of the first half, but University was first to capitalise on its chances.A perfect cross from John Clark on the left wing found the head of Lino Lidestri who calmly directed the ball into the back of the net.
The goal was soon followed by a second for University, when Tek Randla found himself on the end of a pinpoint corner from Anthony Deluca.
Ballarat showed that they will be one of the fitter sides in the competition this year, and despite being two goals down continued to make chances. Eventually they clawed a goal back when Dom Swinton got onto a long ball from defence and carefully lobbed University keeper, John Alekozoglou.
The score was 2-1 at the half time break.
After the break University took control of the match, as Ballarat looked to lose shape as it desperately tried to level the match. The University defence comprising of Laurie Renda, James Boston, and Randla was impenetrable.
University subbed on striker Pat Devuno, and the La Trobe favourite produced some individual brilliance to secure the win. Devuno intercepted a poor clearance by the Ballarat keeper, took the ball to the 18-yard box, shimmied past a defender, and drilled the ball into the bottom left hand corner.
The 3-1 win secured University’s spot at the top of the table.
