La Trobe University Soccer Club has recorded its first win of the season beating rivals GeelongRangers at Geelong’s home ground.
Early chances fell to Pat Devuno and James Boston, but it was Damir Mitric who put LUSC onegoal up half way through the first half when he calmly slotted the ball past the keeper after being set up by a Cuong Pham pass.
Anthony Deluca was unlucky not to add a second to the LUSC score sheet when his 20-yardfree kick hit the outside of the right post.
Geelong should have made more of a couple of late chances which would have evened the score going into the half time break.
The second half was fought out hard as the teams attempted to gain control of the midfield. Geelong was first to capitalise when a free kick allowed Drew Corry to edge the ball over the goal line in a goal mouth scramble.
LUSC then took control, with Nick Moutis dominating the central midfield. Mitric and John Clark (on debut) were narrowly denied, with Clark’s shot impressively saved by the Geelong keeper, Brady Black.
But the day belonged to Deluca, who drilled a 16-yard shot into the right inside netting 5 minutes before the end of the game to secure LUSC its first win of Season 2007.
The win was a pleasing result for LUSC’s new senior coach, John Gillespie (formerly of Diamond Valley Soccer Club).
