University recorded an important win, beating neighbouring team Plenty
Valley 3-0, as the battle for promotion intensifies.

Despite the miserable conditions, University took immediate control of
the match. Cuong Pham proved a handful for Valley with his zig-zag
runs and slick control that opened holes in the Valley defence. The
gaps were exploited by University striker Pat Devuno who was unlucky
not to score in the first 10 minutes with a piercing left foot drive
that hit the cross bar.

Devuno was kept busy by a strong University midfield and eagerly took
his chances to beat the Valley defenders. His cross on the 15 minute
mark found Anthony Deluca who skilfully volleyed the wet ball into the
goal to put University in front.

Valley responded with a period of attack on the University goal which
produced a number of game saving stops by keeper, John Alekozoglou.
The University keeper was not troubled by the greasy conditions as he
defended the goal with agility and skill.

University took back control as Valley looked to tire in the heavy
conditions. Lino Lidestri's linking runs from midfield to attack
created a chance for John Clark who was denied by the Valley crossbar.

Minutes later, Devuno shrugged off his defender to receive the ball in
the penalty area. His right foot crack left the Valley keeper with no
chance as the ball tucked into the left hand post.

Devuno then secured the result when he evaded the Valley offside trap
to find himself with only the keeper to beat. Devuno was forced wide
but defied the tight angle with a magical right foot drive from 25
metres.

University remain 3rd on the ladder, and travel to Ballarat next week.
