La Trobe University Soccer Club beat top of the league Cairnlea 1-0
with an inspired performance that has put them third on the ladder and
one point behind second.

University striker, Damir Mitric, secured the win with a cracking
19-yard drive in the first half that found the top right hand corner
of the goal.

The University striker, who arguably scored goal of the season last
year from a similar distance, picked up the ball from outside the
penalty box. He dummied past one defender before burying the ball into
the net with a thunderous right foot shot.

Cairnlea was not prepared to submit to defeat easily and the crowd was
thrilled with a fast-paced match as the league leaders looked to add
to their 25 goals so far this season.

But University remained strong to secure the result that could have
otherwise sent the club plummeting to eighth on the ladder.

University fielded an unfamiliar line up that featured Sarkis Efe in
defence and Marco Finanzio in midfield. The new personnel further
showcased the depth of University's squad as the club showed season
best form despite resting some of its regulars.

University's wingers John Clark and Paul Umina were again too strong
for their direct opponents.

The league is set for a competitive second half of the season with
eight teams within six points of the top spot.
