Corio SC Vs LUSC Mens Seniors

The first away match of the season was the first of three trips La Trobe are to make to Geelong this year. Corio were hot after a win over local rivals Geelong the week before, and La Trobe were determined to get a win on the board. La Trobe pressed the Corio defence for much of the opening 10 minutes and were soon rewarded when a grandstand strike by Damir from outside the 18 yard box lobbed the keeper and just managed to sneak under the bar (the first goal-of-the-season contender). A second goal followed soon after when Lino, on the end of a corner, volleyed the ball into the six yard box which was then punched by the keeper into the back of Pat’s head. The match developed into a fast paced, end to end, encounter which saw few decisions go La Trobe’s way and a couple of cracking saves from Anthony. Corio were eventually handed a goal shortly before the break following a defensive error on the right wing (no names mentioned).

After the break both teams had early chances. Nick and Paul continued to work hard in the middle and Pat, who was working hard on his tan, was noted to be running hard in attack but mostly into parts not covered by shade. Lucas and Cuong were proving to be an efficient combination on the left side of the park. A change which brought Boston on and pushed Tek into midfield almost had immediate success when the ball fell to Paul whose shot glanced the outside of the right post. Corio responded though with a strong attack which was converted by a shot just out of Anthony’s reach. But showing true character La Trobe were not deterred and soon responded with a third and then fourth goal. Cuong put the fourth away when his shot, reminiscent of Shane Warne’s “wrong’un”, left the keeper stranded and a little confused as it slowly bounced in multiple directions before crossing the line. To rub salt in the wounds , the fourth goal came from a “cut back” (if Harry Kewell’s mis-hit in the World Cup qualifier match was a “pass” to Bresciano then this was a “cut back”) from AD to Jed who ruined his reputation by slamming the ball into the top right hand corner (similar to one of his strikes on goal at training in 2004). The game ended 2-4. Tek and Nick celebrated by attending a bar opening. Pat cancelled his solarium appointment after getting enough sun during the match. We left Damir and Jed at the ground as they were still busy signing autographs.
