Cooch is not our friend
An early pitch inspection from the match committee confirmed The Peoples Team’s fears: Not only is it one of the widest pitches in the league, but the playing surface was announced as the dreaded cooch grass variety. Enough to strike fear in any athlete. It’s the type of stuff you’d describe as travelling backwards on a travelator, or getting nowhere, fast. Nevertheless, The People’s Team knew what they were there for and it certainly wasn’t a haircut. Gabriel ‘Fidel’ Phillips had to step up as our leading force up front with Petka’s rise to the senior ranks. And he did just that. In true Petka fashion, Gabriel ‘Fidel’ Phillips latched onto a Matty ‘Sweetness’ Girardin’s through ball and rounded the keeper, slotting it through with the outside of his foot, much to the chagrin of the onlooking Senior Coach McGuinness. The second goal came thanks to our summer signing Con ‘It’s About Time You’ve Played A Game’ Lalor Boy, as he too dazzled the defence to make the score 2-0. On the half hour mark The People’s Team netted a third as The Brother’s Finanzio teamed up. Luca ‘I’m Calm’ Finanzio’s mesmerising run and limping cross was met by Con ‘It’s About Time You’ve Played a Game’ Lalor Boy who helped it on to the back post with a precise, flicked on, header. Waiting there was Marco ‘Get the Job Done’ Finanzio who volleyed it in and cleaned away the cobwebs hanging in the top left hand corner of the goal mouth. It was at this point, though that the LUSC machine stopped. Two dodgy goals brought our underdone opponents back into the match. 3-2 at half time.

It wasn’t long until The People’s Team made it four after the restart with Matty ‘Sweetness’ Girardin smashing in a lay off in the box after a deep cross was delivered. The People’s Team’s goalkeeper, Ilias ‘Filippini Plasterers’ Gargaronis pulled off some great saves and along with Sava ‘The Guy From Pretty Woman’ Liaskos shut up shop and refused entry to the Werribee attackers for the rest of the game. Four wins on the trot for The People’s Team, the LUSC Reserves.
