The Reserves team maintained their top position of the ladder, after an important 1-0 win against Geelong SC.
University started off with a new system playing a 4-5-1 with Frankie alone up top, and with Gabby and Michael as the two wing backs. Using their wings smartly in the first half, La Trobe kept possession of the ball, and pressured Geelong, but never created any real chances save Ceri’s header hitting the crossbar.
Although Uni had most of the possession, Geelong had the best chance in the first half. Getting caught out in the offensive third after a corner, La Trobe failed to clear the ball, which gave the Geelong striker the chance, one-on-one with Gandi. The shot went wide, leaving the half time score at 0-0.
In the second half La Trobe showed better composure. Changing back to a 3-5-2 structure, the defence looked more comfortable and Geelong was given less room to pass the ball.
La Trobe had most of the possession in the second half as well, creating a couple of very good chances, but it wasn’t until about 10 minutes from full time they were going to score. Gabby got the ball in the penalty box, and, covering it well, won a penalty when he was tackled from behind by the Geelong defender. Martin stepped up and slotted away the penalty in the goalkeeper’s right hand corner.
La Trobe managed to fight off the Geelong pressure following the goal, taking a very important win. Now the team need to recharge for a battle against Lalor, second on the ladder.
