La Trobe’s reserves team once again fielded a very strong team, but only managed a draw against Corio, in a somewhat unenthusiastic appearance.
Starting off as the better team, La Trobe put pressure on Corio early in the game, with a fast paced game with few touches on the ball. Using the wings, with Lucas and Gabs doing a lot of running, La Trobe created many chances, but failed to capitalize until Alex, on his debut, took the matter in his own hands.
Receiving the ball in the left midfield, he showed his soccer intelligence, turning and switching the ball with a beautiful cross to Gabby, once again on the run. Moving off the ball, Alex 15 seconds later was on the receiving end of Gabby’s cross, putting the ball away with a solid shot, with no chance for the keeper.
After the goal, La Trobe continued creating chances, but lacked the decisiveness and precision shown in previous games – proving that more training is needed to sharpen the finishes.
In the second half La Trobe lost a lot of the pace and movement off the ball, letting Corio into the game. Still possessing most of the ball, Uni only created a couple of chances – both solid shots from Bozza, for the day battling enormously in the midfield.
Corio’s tactic for the day was to pump long balls in behind the Uni defence, which put some pressure on La Trobe. Failing to clear one of the balls out of their own defensive third, La Trobe gave away a throw-in close to the corner post, which bounced its way into the goals via a knee, with only 5 minutes to go.
Failing to pick up the pace again, La Trobe recorded a disappointing draw. The player of the day was Alex, who worked hard in the midfield and played very smart soccer, together with Boz, working solidly as always.
The Ressies now need to pick up the thread again, playing Geelong ina tough game on Saturday.
