The Flight of 3 Bald Eagles

With only two games to go, the Bald Eagles decided to hold a high altitude training camp to fine tune their skills. The venue was Limlimbu Reserve, home of the Falls Creek Yetis. Attendance was not compulsory however it was good to see Slater, Boz and the Gabmeister commit themselves to the La Trobe cause, with a special guest appearance by Boston. Some of the La Trobe Juniors who one day aim to wear the ‘Green and Gold” were also present. In the past, the Falls Creek ground has been renowned for its unevenness which has often resulted in injury. Who could forget the 1999 cartwheel incident involving Boz’s brother Carl and the crevice which jumped out of nowhere? Full credit must go to the Falls Creek groundskeeper as the pitch was looking an absolute treat. It would probably now rate higher than the Sydenham and Ashburton pitches.

The team was here to try out some new training drills and test the latest sports technology in extracting the most out of their bodies. Slater started the first afternoon session with a tactical skills lesson on the Summit. With Boston and Kat posing as opposition defenders, he showed the easiest way for a forward to take out a stopper and sweeper in the same play. The tangle of legs, skis and snowboards plummeting down the summit was a spectacle for everyone on the chairlift to watch but it was what Boz and the Gabmeister learnt from that lesson which will help them win the Championship. (Some say the lesson was “never ski down Summit with Matt”). The two guys used every opportunity to practice this new technique for the rest of the Summit session.

For those of you who think training camps are work all day, party all night, you have never experienced the La Trobe training camp. Boz introduced the latest in physiological advancements which get the most out of the human body. For decades, scientific research had dabbled with the idea of sleep deprivation and how one can teach their body to continue to train through out the night instead of wasting precious time sleeping. The ZoeTron 2007 was installed and it was the first time some of the Bald Eagles had experienced this revolutionary technique. Although, it has its critics – mainly those at Guatanomo Bay – the boys were amazed at how well they felt after each session had ended. Expect some interesting reaction times from these boys on Sunday. Some news to hand, the Phillips Corporation are currently working on a new model which will be available for the 2009 season.

These high altitude training camps are vital for the club and the 2009 session is already being planned. In the mean time, the team are preparing for the pre-season low altitude session starting in Launceston in 3 weeks time. We wonder what the club will introduce to this camp?
