The Flight of the Bald Eagle

A week after the La Trobe high of snaring the Thai Superfreak, the Bald Eagles Selection Committee decided to rest their 3 main goalkeepers (Zoolander, Illias and Mahatma Gandhi) and opt for the refreshed Dukes (of Hazard) for the game against North Caulfield. At the same time, Bozza’s international career with the New Zealand ‘All Whites’ was short lived but fortunately he made it back in time before any transfer papers were completed. With Paul Cif and ‘All Beef’ Patty alternating with Wilko and Nick ‘G-Train’ Gonis up front, a score fest was on the cards. The ‘G-Train’ was out to prove that Greece’s miracle elimination from Euro 2008 could easily have been avoided if coach Otto Rehhagel had adopted the style of Total Gonis. The ‘G-Train’ had a number of opportunities but his left boot just couldn’t find the sweet G-spot from a number of weeks ago.

North Caulfield is a young, fit side – actually come to think of it – all the teams we play seem to be young and fit. However, they were completely outclassed by a La Trobe team which appeared to dominate every aspect of the game. Wilko and the G-Train created many early chances however it was the fine finishing of Paul Cif which gave the Bald Eagles the early lead with his first goal at the 5 minute mark. ‘All Beef’ was forever dangerous up front and showed some surprising speed for a 42 year old and scored his first after 31 minutes.

Fired up after the success of the Dutch National team, Bozza and Gerry ‘The Flying Dutchman’ Boontjes won every contest in the air against an opposition which even Gab towered over. The ever reliable backline of Frank, Jimmy, Baxter, Lou and Gerry showed why it is has one of the best defensive records in the league. A small error part way through the second half allowed North Caulfield a small glimmer of hope. However, all it did was fire up Dukes and Co even more and the Bald Eagles replied almost immediately with a quick counter attack. Paul finished with a long awaited hat trick and Patty scored his second in the dying minutes of the game.

Luca, Gab, Boz, Matt U and Robbie Slater were solid all day and constantly beat their opposition midfielders – often embarrassingly. The Grinders Play of the Day belonged to Luca. His run into attack late in the game was awe inspiring – skinning the much faster opponent before cutting in on two defenders. A good solid win all round.
