The Flight of the Bald Eagle
This week saw the Bald Eagles up against the organized team of Central Park Rangers. Congratulations to Ilias who played his first game of the year. You could tell he was fired up as he was the only player who bothered warming up. It was this casual attitude to the game which almost became La Trobes undoing. With many players trying to take on everyone and not playing the simple “on the ground passing”, the Bald Eagles conceded a goal in the first half against the run of play.
The second half was a better spectacle with Patty “all beef” Pasquale and Matt “Robbie Slater” Carmichael having a number of shooting opportunities. If only the goals were another 30 metres bigger. The backline of Frank, Gerry, Jimmy, Lou and Baxter were solid most of the day with the Rangers having very few shots at goal. As Gab said at half time “in all honesty, the backs have had to do nothing today but they have done it very well”
The Bald Eagles scored the equalizer at the 53rd minute, after a nice corner from Gonis was flicked on by Lou to the feet of Patty, who laid it off (in Patty’s own words) to Boz for a point blank shot. The winner came 20 minutes later after a nice through ball to Patty saw him split the defence and slot it past the keeper. From then on, it was a matter of preserving the lead. The new interchange rotation policy, soon to be adopted by the AFL stewards, worked well. With every player rotated off the bench every 7 ½ minutes, the opposition were completely bamboozled and struggled with their key match ups as a result. In fact Central Park Rangers decided to implement their own interchange system and rotated their goal keeper three times late in the second half.
Although not a pretty game, La Trobe is getting results on the board. Considering they are one of the few teams in the league to have not trained together one would assume when the fitness levels increase and things start to gel there will be few teams in this league that could beat them.
