Sunday was a significant day in the history of the La Trobe University Soccer Club. It was the first game for the La Trobe Uni Fourths, dubbed the Eagles, a team which has come about due to the large number of players registered this year.
The new team will play in the South /East Thirds competition and started with an unlucky 3-4 defeat against a more experienced Mooroolbark team. An 11am start out in Morrolbark resulted in a few latecomers but by game time we had 11 players ready to go. The team started well by scoring the first goal beautifully slotted in by Tristan after a Johnny A free kick. Mooroolbark however got on top and won a dubious penalty to make it 1-1. Mooroolbark continued to do well and scored two more goals to be in a comfortable position at half-time. The mood in the dressing room was still positive and we were confident we could get back in the game.

The second half started well with La Trobe getting on top, Tristan began dominating on the midfield and Michael Fox provided a good target up forward. Yass, who had swapped from midfield to striker got a goal back to make it 3-2. At the other end Aaron, Grady, Jimmy Zap and Phil defended grimly but Mooroolbark regained their 2 goal buffer after winning another penalty and converting the spot kick. Michael Fox again brought us back into the game with a great solo run which lead to a goal and from then on La Trobe looked for the equaliser and came very close a couple of times, including Tristan scoring a brilliant 30 meter goal which was controversially disallowed for offside. Eventually Mooroolbark held on to win 4-3 but the Eagles should be proud of their efforts. Good performances by Lachlan and Al who ran hard all day on the wings, Phil was hard at it when switched to defence but the standouts were the evergreen Jimmy Zap in defence, Tristan in midfield and Pascal who played in goals and pulled of some great saves. A promising start by the Eagles and it shouldn’t be too long until they notch up their first win.
